Clearwater
Clearwater Beach is part of the City of Clearwater but is separated from it by the Intracoastal Waterway. Cleveland Avenue is one of the city's historic sidewalks, which also includes BayCare Ballpark and Coachman Park.
The Church of Scientology owns most of the property in downtown Clearwater.
History
Clearwater is now the original home of the Tocobaga people. Around 1835, the U.S. Army began building Fort Harrison, named for William Henry Harrison, as an outpost during the Seminole Wars. The castle sits on a bluff overlooking Clearwater Harbor, which later became part of the 20th-century residential development known as Harbor Oaks. Archaeologists from the University of South Florida excavated the site in 1962 after Mark Wyllie found a bullet in an underground cache while planting trees in his yard.
The population of the region began to increase when the Federal Labor Act of 1842 granted 160 acres (0.65 km2) to anyone who could bear arms and work the land. Early settlers included the Stevens, Stevenson, Sever, and McMullen families, who owned and farmed large tracts of land. Before 1906 the area was known as Clearwater. The name "Shimizu" is thought to come from the freshwater spring that flows near the present-day townhouse. The island is filled with many other freshwater springs, most of which can be found in the bay or in the harbor itself. The first road connecting Clearwater and Tampa which was originally part of Hillsborough County was built in 1849 and reduced the distance once occupied by the 2 cities.
Downtown
Downtown Clearwater has been renovated in recent years. General beautification was carried out with the completion of many high-rise buildings and a large ship. New restaurants, cafes, and other amenities are coming to the area, which will be renamed "Cleveland Street." The Theater Royal is also planned to be renovated.
